Consecrating the day…
When I established Consecrate the Day in 2013, it was after much contemplation on life’s essence, the significance of our experiences, and my spiritual journey. The title, Consecrate the Day, was intentionally selected to reflect my daily intention to find the sacred within the commonplace and ordinary. This approach profoundly transforms perspective. Embracing the awareness of Divine Presence, which envelops and permeates all aspects of life, nurtures a perpetual connection with God. Each moment becomes an opportunity to recognize that goodness exists in every day, inviting a deeper relationship with God, gratitude and reflection in our spiritual journey.
For me, consecrating the day begins early. Each morning, the symphony of bird songs fills the air, a delightful reminder of their relentless spirit. Regardless of yesterday's happenings, they greet each day with a fresh start. As an early riser, I recall a morning after a hurricane had swept through our neighborhood. As I sat in the quiet predawn darkness, I questioned whether the birds would return, let alone sing. But as dawn approached, the sound of a mockingbird's melody broke the silence, encouraging others to follow. The blue jays' squawks soon followed, adding a touch of humor to the morning. Gradually, the rest of the feathered choir joined in, their chorus a testament to their resilience. Their songs filled me with joy and gratitude. In these moments, I'm reminded of the divine presence that is akin to these bird songs. Always present, even in times of storm and strife, offering comfort and solace. We simply need to attune ourselves and listen.
This poem flowed from a morning spent listening to birdsong and enjoying God’s creation…
Nature’s Symphony Chorus
Natures Symphony Chorus
Fills me with delight
As the scent of jasmine
Wafts across the landscape
Of my mind.
A new day dawns.
birds greet the sunrise
With melody born of instinct
And wonderment.
I awaken to their song.
White-winged doves and mourning doves
carry the bass notes
While western kingbirds,
Baltimore and Bullocks orioles chime in
Their chirps and high calls
Bring complexity to the whole.
American robins, house finches,
sparrows and Carolina wrens
Sing the chorus while
Mockingbirds hop from part to part
Filling the in-between spaces with their song.
Northern cardinals and
Western kingbirds bring precision
Staccato notes
Capturing one's attention
In key moments of unexpected crescendo.
A red-eyed viriole sings soprano
Its high piercing song,
lovely and light
Lilts over the top
Adding vibrant tones…
Nature's liturgical dance.
Tiny hummingbirds
Sing grace notes
Filling me with bliss.
Vibrant sounds
From one so small.
Chimney swifts
Conduct the Symphony
Swooping in splendor
Across the sky
Two by two.
A new day dawns.
birds greet the sunrise
With melody born of instinct
And wonderment.
I awaken to their song.
The scent of jasmine
Wafts across the landscape
Of my mind.
Natures Symphony Chorus
Fills me with delight.
Consider spending some time in nature. Allow yourself to feel the awe and wonder of God’s creation. Allow all of your senses to be active. Write a poem or sketch what you see, hear, feel and experience. Where does the presence of God shimmer for you today?
Blessings!
