Travel Altars

by Mary Ann Matthys

My work as a Spiritual Director takes me to coffee shops, parks, hospitals, retreat centers, restaurants, and other places to meet with those I accompany on the spiritual journey. I find Travel Altars to be a valuable way of creating sacred space and inviting Divine Presence into conversations. I hope you enjoy my book!

Poems & Prayers

for Ordinary Mystics

by

Mary Ann Matthys

My latest book, Poems and Prayers for Ordinary Mystics contains inspiring, thought-provoking poems and prayers that explore life and faith through the lens of the Heart.  We are all Mystics.  Each soul has the capacity to touch the ineffable. Often one simple numinous experience of Divine Presence changes everything.  Join me as we explore the spiritual journey through the lens of the Ordinary Mystic who resides in each soul.

What people are saying…

This lovely book was written by a spiritual director and is an excellent, practical guide to creating a travel altar, which is a special way to keep yourself grounded and connected to Spirit (God, the Divine, whatever name you give it) when you are away from home. I have a little travel altar that I take with me when I lead women’s retreats, and this book has opened my eyes to many new ways of taking Spirit with me wherever I go. Also included are some excellent resources and examples from Mary Ann’s own life.

Artist, Author, and Wise Woman, Mary Ann Matthys, in her beautifully illuminated book of sacred inspiration, Travel Altars, invites us “…into a thin place where the boundary between ordinary reality and the heavenly realm disappears.”

Opening this book is an invitation to enter liminal space to not only savor the author’s practical guidance, but to also be inspired by her images, poetry and prayers. You will also discover practical suggestions for ways to create travel altars, where to look for inspiration, and how to incorporate: bells, candles, imagery, incense and prayer beads.

Travel Altars is for anyone seeking a spiritual practice “…to actively consecrate each day as an expression of sacred awareness flowing through all of life.”

Read Travel Altars, and begin the pilgrim’s practice of carrying your oratory wherever you go, as you welcome Divine Presence into all of life’s journey.

-Sibyl Dana Reynolds, author

This quiet book is a companion for us, showing us myriad ways to use the meaningful objects in our lives as portals to a walk with the Divine. The author shows us how to collect small symbolic objects that hold memories or aspirations for us, and to put them together in beautiful arrangements in our immediate environments. They then become “altars”, places that call and hold our attention and our positive intentions that can keep us aware of the deepest within us. She also includes the history of items we may choose to include, such as bells, incense, or textiles, plus quotations from wise elders and from wisdom literature. The book is beautiful, with the author’s artwork and poetry opening each chapter. Simply a delight. And as I am going on a trip tomorrow, it has guided me into taking a few items for my own traveling altar!
