Praying the Hours/ Liturgy of the Hours

Finding the Seasons of the Day...

For me praying the hours is about a rythym of life.  It is a pattern of prayer that marks the changes in the day and brings God ‘into the mix’ in each part of our day.  It is one of my favorite ways to consecrate each day. There are many good apps and websites for praying the hours.

http://universalis.com/is one of the most comprehensive websites and includes scripture readings from the Daily Office which is used by most Christian denominations.

My favorite book on praying the hours is:

Seven Sacred Pauses:

Living Mindfully Through the Hours of the Day

Front Cover
by Macrina Wiederkehr.
She captures beautifully what Br. David Steindl Rast describes as the “Seasons of the Day.”  He writes:
“The monastic understanding of the word “hour” goes back to a Greek word, hora, which is older than our notion of a day broken up into twenty four hour segments.  The original notion of hour is something quite different…It is not a numerical measure; it is a soul measure.  We come closer to appreciation of the original meaning of hour when we reflect on the seasons of the year…a season is a mood and an experience, not an exact period.”  in his book, Music of Silence.
